Selecting a transport partner is one of the highest-impact decisions a shipper makes. The wrong choice leads to delayed deliveries, damaged goods, and unhappy customers. The right partner becomes an extension of your supply chain.

Start with capability matching: does the carrier have the right vehicle type, capacity, and lane coverage for your routes? A reefer truck operator is the wrong fit for dry bulk, regardless of price.

Evaluate track record through references, on-time delivery rates, and damage/loss history. Digital platforms provide performance scores based on completed trips — a more reliable signal than verbal assurances.

Pricing transparency matters. Compare all-in rates including loading/unloading, detention charges, and fuel surcharges. The lowest per-kilometre rate often hides costs that appear on the final invoice.

Technology readiness is increasingly important. Can the carrier provide live tracking? Will drivers upload digital POD? Do they integrate with your ERP for automated status updates? These capabilities reduce your team's manual follow-up burden.

Finally, structure the relationship with clear SLAs: pickup windows, transit times, escalation contacts, and payment terms. Review performance quarterly and maintain a bench of backup carriers for peak seasons and lane emergencies.
